Bintan Island is the biggest isle in the band of Riau Archipelago, casing an area of 1,140 square kilometers. In old Chinese, the name of Bintan Island denotes the “Memory of a Dream”, and in factual sense of the word, Bintan Island is a land of elongated dust-covered roads, lush green vegetation and sleepy villages, cuddled amidst mangrove marshes, and fishing villages built on stilt s over the water. Its close propinquity to Singapore has made Bintan Island an admired tourist destination. The highest mountain on the Bintan Island - Bintan Besar, is the relics of an old volcano, and at an altitude of 376 m, is the uppermost point on the Riau Archipelago.
