The Benaki Museum was founded by Anthony Benaki in 1930 and is the biggest independent museum in Greece. It is the first Greek museum which came into existence through a collector's love for his country. The collections of Greek art, spanning from prehistory to the current times, is displayed in this redecorated neo-classical edifice in the middle of Athens. The Benaki Museum ranks amongst the great patronages which have enhanced the material benefits of the Greek state. Benaki seems to give a holistic rendering of the country in addition to its cultural and artistic revolution from what it was in the Antiquity to what it is contemporarily. Together, it is the oldest museum in Greece, which runs as a Foundation under Private Law.
