The city of Aphrodisias was named after Aphrodite the deity of love but after the spread of Christianity to the county its name was altered to Stauroupolis which means the City of the Cross. One gets to see a marble mine near the city from which stone was used to craft sculpture and figurines many of which have been unearthed by archaeologists. Aphrodisias was legendary for its school of sculpture and many sculptures from this conurbation have been found all through the Roman Empire. The theatre which was built in the first century B C is one of the outstanding edifices and was a significant place for meetings in the Roman and Byzantine city.
